Angel Trumpet tree

Question
QUESTION: Hi, i was given 2 very large planted Angel Trumpet trees because the previous owners didn't have anymore room for them. I took them in, and put them in my basement next to my walkout so they get some sun. They're approximately 6 ft tall each. When i first got them, they bloomed like crazy. One of the trees (the one that's furthest away from the window- not by much, but it's behind the other one that's directly next to the window), the small branches are turning yellow and dying. There's no leaves on the tree. The other one atleast has leaves still. I live in Michigan so it's usually pretty gray this season. I water them once a week only. I'm scared it's dying and i can't find any answers online about the branches turning yellow, just about leaves...... Any advice?

ANSWER: Angel Trumpet plants prefer full sun for best growth and heavy blooming. Although growing them next to a window will normally not harm them, they definitely will not thrive like they would outdoors. They grow best when the weather is damp. This is extremely hard to simulate indoors with the dry heat.

As with most plants, soil is very important. Angel Trumpets like a fertile soil, rich in organic matter. They also need heavy dosages of phosphorus and very little nitrogen. But there is no doubt that poor soil will cause the type of symptoms you have described.

Finally, make sure the pot is at least 12?in diameter. Smaller pots will result in the plant becoming root-bound.  Also, since pots tend to dry out faster, always ensure that that the top 2?of soil is moist. You may need to water it more often if the conditions are low in humidity.

One last tip regarding this particular plant. Be sure to prune the plant often; at least once every four months. This helps stimulate blooming and branch growth. It also makes for a healthier plant.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike

QUESTION: Thx. One more question. Since i'm all new to this, can you give me suggestions on how to prune it? I have no clue how to do so. Should i start with pruning off those yellow branches (they're not very big)? Thx!

Answer
You definitely want to prune off the discolored branches first. In regard to the rest of the plant, I would prune 1/4 of the plant in a uniform manner. As long as you don't prune more than 1/3, there is no danger to the plant. Also be sure to use clean pruners. You can sterilize used pruners with a solution of one tbsp. of ammonia per gallon of water.

Have a good New Year.
