pit to sprout?

Question
hi, i planted an apricot pit in good soil and gave her plant nutrients. I feed her when she's dry, and have her under UV lights 24/7.

i did not dry out the pit and plant the actual seed. i ate the fruit and planted the raw pit.

do you think it will sprout and grow into a healthy tree?

thanks

Answer
Hi Nadine,
Thanx for your question.  I doubt if the apricot pit will germinate under the conditions in which you have it.  Most seeds of deciduous fruit trees (fruit trees that lose their leaves in the fall and go dormant during the winter...) require a cold period in order for their seeds to germinate.  Generally, what happens is there are hormones within the seed that are triggered to go dormant at the onset of winter and cold temperatures.  With a little moisture and the returning warmth in spring, other hormones are triggered which cause the embryo within the seed to begin to grow and sprout.  This is a natural defense system Nature put in her seeds to prevent them from sprouting at the wrong time.  I would advise that you place the pot outdoors for the winter and water once a week.  I believe the seed will sprout in the spring after it warms up.  I hope this helps.
Tom
