AV went from white to purple

Question
Hi, I bought an AV about 18 mos ago, it has bloomed only 3x since then. I am not sure if that is normal. My main question is now I see some new buds that are purple (the 4th blooming time), all previous blooms were white. Is this normal? thanks for your insights. Jill

Answer
Jill, let me first apologize for the delay in answering you.  Your question was a difficult one, and I had to check with several resources.  I actually did not find a definite answer to the change in coloring, however, I did find that temperature could have something to do with it.  Occasionally, if there is a variance in temperature you can find that a plant will regain its original coloring when the temperature in the environment becomes cooler.  I also know that it could have something to do with genetics.  Yes, flowers have DNA, too!  There could be a mutation in the genes of your violet that causes this.  If you check very closely when your violet is blooming white, your are apt to find small spots or streaks of purple.

I want to give you the web address of the African Violet Society of America.  They are a wealth of information and they take questions, also.  Go to www.avsa.org.
Good luck.  I hope I have helped some.
