indoor palm trees

Question
We have an indoor palm try which I think might be an Areca Palm. At first it seemed to be dying on us so we repotted it in a bigger pot with a drainage whole at the bottom. We prunned the dry palm andl eft the two that seemed to be healthy. We take it out for watering about once a week and every now and then if a find a glass with some water in it I will pour it in. It was doinf fine for a while and five new palms have begun to sprout and are still unopened, however, one of the more mature leaves began to wilt completely down-ward and is now very dry. Is ther something wrong with the tree or are we doing something wrong.

Answer
The plant should have bright indirect sunlight.  If it does not have the light needed it will slowly decline and die.

Do you fertlize?  Try doing that they are heavy feeders.  A good balanced fertlizer every few weeks would help.  Fish Emulsion (high in nitrogen for healthy growth) every couple of weeks will do wonders for just about any plant.

Look in the soil for little rice (but smaller) bugs.  I just had one die that was infested with these bugs (soil mealies).  They eat the roots of the plant.  This could be another reason for its decline.   If this is the case the infestation is too large to save the plant.

I hope this helps.

Happy growing
Kristina
