Stunted growth-Bangalow Palm

Question

Palm
Hi, I have 3 Bangalow palms in my garden, this year I have noticed the largest one seems to have something wrong, the new fronds coming through are opening very close to top, they are not coming out completely, so the palm is very compact, looks quite strange, usually the the frond comes up and then opens, the palm is around 18 feet tall and been growing beautifully for 5 years, it is planted next to a concrete path (unlike the 2 other palms)and the roots are pushing the wooden fencing, it is lawn on the other side. perfect growing conditions, can't see any diseases on it. HELP, Many thanks for your time, Meg

Answer
Hi Megan , what you describe is more then likely a nutrient deficiency, or possibly the roots are in someway compromised (unable to expand any further or being cramped..). I would first try a foliar nutrient spray, they sell in concentrate and it is called "chelated palm nutrient spray", administer it in the morning when the dew is still on the fronds, this way the palm will taken it in through its "Stomatas" (pores) and the nutrients will be utilized quickly. Try this once a week for the next 3-4 weeks, and see if you see a gradual improvement. You did not mention where you live, for a third possibility exists, and that would be cold stress, but the temperatures would have had to be well down in the mid to high 20's. let me know...Nick
