Pot Luck

Question
Hi, Nick,
We have had our Paradise Palm for many years, and found, by accident, that it doesn抰 like direct sunlight.  We located it in almost every part of the house but it had a limp, lack-lustre, look until we placed it in the dining room, where, because of the conservatory, it didn抰 receive direct sunlight.  Since then, it has looked really healthy.  However, we are concerned about the size of pot, and any affect there would be by keeping it in the same one for the past ten years.  We would also like to know the optimum size for a fully grown palm, together with the best type of feeding?

Answer
Hi Bryon, I will be honest with you, I never heard of a "Paradise" Palm? but the general rule for containerized Palms is when an emerging frond looks stunted, then that is an indication of stress, usally caused by a cramped root system; at that point, it needs to be repotted to a larger container. I can't tell you the maximum size of your Palm because I am not familiar with the variety. Two Palms that come to mind that like a shady location would be the Cat palm or the Lady Palm. Nick
