caring for elephant ears

Question
Is it feasible to grow elephant ear plants indoors exclusively, or do they NEED to be outside??

Answer
There are many different cultivars, some require shade others like some sun, but the most common variety likes lots of water and a shady area, so indoors would be just fine, but keep them misted (simulating humidity) at least every other day to deter spider mites and keep the soil damp (not wet!); a large container is needed, for they have a large root ball and if it is cramped, it will take its toll on the crown, the leaves will not be as big and would show stress. A better choice would be a dumb cane, for it is more suited to an indoor environment. Nick
