mammouth elephant ears

Question
Hi I just purchased mammoth elephant ear bulbs. Will they grow in Pittsburgh Pa and will they die in the winter? Can you tell me the best way to plant them. Thank You Merry

Answer
Hi Merry,
Thanx for your question. Yes, elephant ears will grow in Pittsburgh.  Wait until mid-May when the soil has warmed and plant the bulb so that it is covered by about 4 inches of soil.  They will gorwo in the shade and they'll grow in full sun and they like lots of warmth and water.  Don't let them dry out.  If no regular rain, make sure they get watered at least once a week.  Plant the pointed end down.  You'll have to dig the bulbs up after the first frost otherwise they will not overwinter in your climate outdoors.  I hope this helps.
Tom
