red banana browning and spotting

Question
Banana
Banana
QUESTION: I live in Florida and have 2 red bananas on the east side of
my house.  Recently I've treated it with Ortho Max for insects
because I've had snails in the past.  Now, the leaves are
browning on the edges and some holes are visible throughout
the leaves.  I no longer think it's snails.

ANSWER: Bananas do not need any insect treatment, for they are not bothered by any that are of any concern, so I think the Ortho you treated it with may have stressed it; the only other thing may be you planted them to deep, for they need to be planted at the same level that they were in the container. Lift them and then replant them so that the top of  the root system is at soil level and then keep the Corm (underground Rhizome) damp but not wet.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response.  I do have about 4 inches of
mulch around it.  Should I move that away from the base?

In the past snails have eaten my leaves so they are always
on my mind.  The first of two treatments with the Ortho
didn't seem to affect them.  A month later (about 2 weeks
ago) I did the second treatment.  I will stop with those
treatments and see how it does.

I have not added fertilizer.  Should I?

Thanks so much.

Answer
....The mulch is good! just make sure that it isn't planted deeper then I said; every other watering, give it some Miracle-grow at half the directed strength and then a 10-10-10 granular in about 2 months. Once new healthy growth commences, you can begin using full strength Miracle-grow every Month and a high potassium (last digit in the 3 numbers) granular every 3-4 months. Keep it damp, but not wet!
