spliting trunk on queen palm

Question
I have a 20ft Queen Palm that has several large split's in the trunk from the ground up about 3 feet. The tree seems healthy and the top fronds look great. What causes the splits and should I use some type of pruning spray to protect the tree because the splits are 1 to 2 inches deep??

Answer
Hi James,,,this is a common affliction on many Palms, and unless its located at a stress point where the palm could shear off, it is usually nothing to be overly concerned about; spray the crack with a fungicide to prevent any fungal development and watch for insect infestation and treat accordingly,,otherwise , if the Palm is healthy, leave it be.
