Queen Palm Trunk Discolored

Question

Palm
I have a well established Queen Palm in ground, full sun in Orlando Florida. I have just noticed a portion of the trunk is starting to turn black. The affected area is approximately eight inches and four feet long. The tree appears very healthy other than the discolored trunk.

Answer
Hi Jim, it could be a fungus as there are diseases going around the FL area that can kill about 4 varieties of Palms.   Ganoderma butt rot is a disease which can kill a Florida palm tree. It is caused by Ganoderma zonatum, a fungus which invades the base or butt of palm trees. It usually enters through a wound. I would check out Atomic Grow which will make your palm healthy again so that the fungus will go away.  kathy
