LOCUST TREE ROOTS

Question
LAST YEAR I HAD FOUR LOCUST TREES CUT DOWN AND THE STUMPS GROUND.
THIS YEAR I HAVE MANY SMALL LOCUST SPROUTS POPPING UP ALL OVER MY YARD. I TRIED PULLING UP THE SPROUTS, BUT SOME ARE ANCHORED TO SUBSURFACE ROOTS. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET RID OF THEM.

Answer
The root system is still alive and sprouting new growth. You can either keep mowing over the sprouts and soon the roots will run out of energy and stop sprouting or you can apply a herbicide called Roundup to the foliage and kill the sprout and the roots. I would put on plastic gloves and dip a sponge into the Roundup solution and apply to the leaves. Roundup will kill any green plant so spraying will kill the grass under the sprout. Wipe the foliage and try to keep from dripping on the grass and this should kill the sprouts. The gloves are just to keep the smell of your hands. Roundup will not harm people.
