Japanese Maple Damage

Question
I have two puppies who tore into my Japanese Maple pretty badly this winter.  The bark is damaged with tooth marks and in some places, whole branches have been gnawed off.
I do notice buds set on some remaining branches.  How can I best help the tree?  It is now past winter and I don't want to do further damage by pruning.
Thanks, Andrea

Answer
About all that can be done is cut only the broken branches off at the break. The places where the bark has been damaged will heal itself over time. Then wait until it leafs out and you can see if there maybe other branches that are dead. Of course keep the puppies away from the tree.
