Was the cambrium damaged?  What should I do?
Thanks,

Answer
Yes the cambium is damaged. And it looks like severe. If the damage goes all the way around the tree trunk there is not much that can be done. If not then you might try putting grafting wax over the exposed area of the trunk--this will seal the area and keep moisture in and maybe the tree will recover. Also spray the area with an insecticide for borers to keep these insects from entering the wound. Check with your local garden/ nursery type store for these products. Beyond that keep the tree watered during dry spells and you will just have to wait and see if it makes it.
