Japanese red maple

Question
I have a japanese red maple that is loseing it's bark. It doesn't look as though it is being eaten away but is pealing away.

Answer
There are many varieties of Japanese maples some do shed their bark starting near the ground. If the foliage is  healthy looking and there are no signs of any insect boring into the trunk I would say this bark shedding is normal. Let it peel off on it own.
