repairing damage on japanese maple tree trunk

Question
we recently purchased a piece of property and had to transplant a 4' japanese maple...in the process we damaged the bark on it about 2' up...3/4 of the way around...What do we do to repair it, or what would you suggest?

Answer
I would cut any loose bark from around the wound and put grafting wax on  the wound to help seal the moisture in and fungi out. You can wrap the wound with a tree wrap for this winter but remove it this next spring. Next spring I would spray the wound with an insecticide called Merit --this will prevent borer type insects form entering the wound. The tree since it it young will heal over this wound.
