CUTTING OF BLUE SPRUCE ROOD

Question
I LIVE JUST OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO, IL AND HAVE A 30 FOOT TALL BLUE SPRUCE WHICH IS ABOUT 30 YEARS OLD.  THE TRUNK AT THE BASE IS ABOUT 18 INCHES IN DIAMETER.  A ROOT ( 5 INCHES IN DIA) HAS SURFACED ABOUT 12 FEET FROM THE BASE OF THE TREE AND RUINED A SIDEWALK. MY QUESTION IS: MAY I CUT THE ROOT OUT WITHOUT CAUSING ANY DAMAGE TO THE TREE OR ITS STABILITY?

Answer
Cuting a root 12 feet from the trunk will not effect the stability of the tree. It may sligthly damage the tree which will show up as some branch die back on that side of the tree. But this should be slight. Make a clean cut and it will heal over without any fungi problems.
