weeping mulberry tree

Question
We moved to a new house that has a weeping mulberry tree.  It was neglected for almost a year.  How do I take care of it(pruning) without hurting it?  We live in WNY, near Zoar Valley.

Answer
You did not say what size this tree is or how it was neglected. The limbs that are reaching the ground can be pruned back some --this should be done in the fall. Just cut them off to the height you want. Upper limbs need to be left alone. This tree does not need much attention and will grow into the weeping shape with out any pruning. You can fertilize it with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb per inch trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good. Mulching around the the with an organic mulch at not more than 3 inches deep not piled up on the trunk will help hold moisture.  All this is general but without a little more information on the tree and how it was neglected It is about all I can do.
