Identifying the Fatal Error

A weeping mulberry planted July 1 in Kentucky, watered by "light spraying from above for 20 seconds twice per watering," showing curled, brittle, black-spotted leaves and rapid defoliation by July 4 is severely underwatered. Leaf spraying ≠ root watering.

Correct Watering Protocol

1. Build soil berm at drip line (3" high).
2. Fill basin completely 3×/week for first month.
3. Check moisture 6" deep—should be moist, not soggy.
4. Stop foliar spraying—promotes fungus/bacteria.

Black Spots = Likely Fungal Secondary

Stress + wet leaves = fungal leaf spot. Fix watering first; spots may resolve. If persistent, apply copper fungicide.

Planting Depth Check

Ensure root flare visible—no deeper than pot. Mulch 3" (not on trunk). No fertilizer first month.
