redwood tree

Question
We have a redwood tree in our backyard that's been there for at least 30 yrs (we have lived here for 17 yrs). We landscaped the back 5 yrs ago and put in pavers. The tree's roots have caused the pavers to "uproot" (no pun intended) causing a safety issue. Can we go under the pavers and cut the tree roots or will we kill the tree in the process or maybe worse yet make the tree unstable? Should we have an arborist come and give us an opinion? thanks for your help

Answer
I would contact a local Arborist and have them look at this. In general the cutting of the roots will damage the tree by causing foliage dieback, it should not have any effect on the stability of the tree. You maybe able to add a few inches of sand under the pavers lifting the pavers over the roots. But you will not want to add too much since could along with the pavers cause the soil to be compacted on the roots damaging the roots. I would select a Certified Arborist only. Here is the web link to the organization that certifies Arborist.
