crimson maple tree

Question
My crimson maple tree has two limbs that have a split and sap is leaking down the trunk. Do i have to be worried about this?  I transplanted this tree about 4.5 yrs ago and it was about 30 feet tall when that was done. It seems to be doing rather well except for this.

Answer
It sounds like an insect called a borer. These will bore into the trunk and the tree will exude sap. Spray the wound with an insecticide called merit. This will kill the borer in the trunk and the tree will stop exuding and the wound will heal itself. Check with your local nursery for Merit .
