Magnolia Trunk Damage

Question
Right after we moved into our new house in Quinto Vicentino, Italy, my husband began to cut down a small Magnolia tree (the type with dark pink flowers) to make room in our very small yard.  He used a hand saw, but stopped after about 1/8th of the way through the trunk because I asked him to save the tree.  That was last fall.  The tree has bloomed normally this spring, and leaves are budding out evenly over the whole tree.  However, the trunk wound does not look completely healed to me.  Could the tree still die from this wound?  Is there something I should try to 'seal' the wound with?  Your advice is much appreciated.

Answer
The wound will heal over--it may take a year or so depending on the growth of the tree. No need to put anything on the wound in fact this will slow the healing process down. May want to watch the wound and if you see any saw dust coming form the wound spray the area with an insecticide for borers. If you have garden type stores there they should have an insecticide for borers.
