Sap On maple leaves

Question
QUESTION: I have a Maple Tree Not sure what kind. The leaves are green in early spring and turns very dark red from early summer on. Some leaves are now falling off. The leaves are covered in Sap. In fact most of all my leaves are covered in sap. The leaves are still green with sap. Also I have to cut some branches, when is is a good time.
Thank you
John

ANSWER: If the sap is sticky this is an insect that sucks the plant juices and secrete a substance called honeydew which ids high in sugar content. Control these insects and the sap will stop. Treat the soil around the tree with a product called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control. The roots will transport the insecticide to the foliage and when the insects suck the juices they are killed. The treatment will last the whole season. Check with your local nursery for this product. Here is a web link to more information on this.

Do the pruning in the winter after leaf fall, that way the tree will not leak sap like it would during the growing season.

Answer
Then you will need to use a spray insecticide on the foliage. The key will be to cover both sides of the foliage and repeat the treatment in about 10-14 days to insure control.
Contact Insecticides Numerous contact insecticides are registered for aphid control. Since aphids are often placed under considerable pesticide pressure in field crops and greenhouses, they may be resistant to certain categories of insecticides. Therefore, if you do not obtain reasonable control, consider rotation to another insecticide. Contact insecticides currently registered for aphid control include: acephate (Orthene), bendiocarb (Ficam,  bifenthrin (Talstar), chlorpyrifos (Dursban),  diazinon, , lindane, malathion, nicotine sulfate, pyrethrum,, rotenone, resmethrin, and tetramethrin + sumithrin. I would prefer the Orthene since it has some systemic action and will last longer.
