Bore worms

Question

Elm Tree
I live in Southern California and I have a 30 year old Japanese or Chinese elm tree that has bore worms. It had carpenter ants that we got rid off then came the bore worms. The trunk is about 64 in. We treated small areas and applied pruning sealer but the worms came back and moved higher. The leaves on the tree are now all dead. Can I still save this tree?

Answer
Spray the trunk as high up as you can reach with an insecticide called Onyx. This will kill the borers in the trunk. Borers attack trees under stress so I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good. Do this now and again in the spring.
