broken branch

Question

broken branch
Hello! This is a receipt for a question you recently asked at allexperts.com, in category Trees. Most of our questions were answered in 3 days. Thanks for using our service!  Your question was "Hello Mr. Hyland, I have an aprox. 12 ft. high colorado blue spruce in my backyard .This past winter snow in great amounts was pushed into it and broke a branch about half way up the tree almost flush with the trunk. Broken branch is about1/2" to 5/8" in diameter and is broke halfway through so that the branch is drooping. Is there a way to clamp, bolt,or screw it back together? I can submit a close up picture if you could provide me your email address. Thank you, Bill"

Answer
I am sorry there is not really anything that can be done for that branch. It broke too close to the trunk and the split is too deep and wide. The is not enough room on either side of the break to attach an clamp etc. to hold the branch together. The best thing would be to cut the branch off about 1/4 inch from the trunk. The wound will heal over by itself. The tree will fill in the area on its own over time. Sorry.
