surface water leaks n trees

Question
I have along one side of my yard,3 chinese elms(won't die) a poplar thats growth is stunted, a palm tree, and 2 cottonwoods. with a catalpa tree in the middle of the yard. theres a pvc pipe that leaks water and the roots there are very fine, but theres so much its almost impossible to dig through. can I use root kill? the drip is about 6ft frm the chinese elms. These have been "killed:" 3 times the past 15 yrs n keep comming back. The roots and shade combined have kept the grass from growing. while tilling I have found several very large roots just a few inches from the surface. Any ideas what to do? This is a small yard, about 60ft by 30ft Thanx for any ideas

Answer
If you are trying to kill the trees spray the new sprouts with a herbicide called Roundup. Roundup will kill any green plant so beware if it gets on the grass it will kill it to. The sprouts will carry the herbicide to the roots killing them also. If spraying will kill other plants you can take a cloth and wet the cloth with the Roundup from the container and wipe the sprouts with the roundup. Wear plastic gloves to keep the herbicide off your hands--it will not harm you but does leave a smell on your hands.
