hedging , when to trim.

Question
I just moved to southern New Mexico and was surprised to find a 4 feet hedge (some kind of privit I think) around the garden. Can I trim it back this month or should I wait?

Answer
Gord,
Go ahead and trim the hedges. If it's privet, the more you prune the better. I would also avoid fertilizing unless you want to spend every weekend with the hedge trimmers. The only time you want to avoid pruning is in late summer. The new growth will not have time to mature and may get burned by cold weather.
Good Luck, Doug Roberson
