Hedge

Question
Hello Doug-

I live in Indian Harbour Beach, FL (just soth of Cocoa Beach)
about 3 blocks from the ocean. I am re-landscaping my yard and
I am looking for a plant that would make a good hedge. I would
like one that has flowers if possible, can be kept too about 4 feet
in height (below window) but does not grow too fast or too big
like Hibiscus and Dwarf Oleander. Indian Hawthorne grows too
slow and too low. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your
time.

Answer
Alan,
I'm afraid I won't be alot of help on this one. I would have recommended one of the varieties of oleander, but you have ruled that out. I agree that hibiscus grows fast, but the real concern is in the constant pruning which removes bloom buds. One plant variety which will grow in full sun, despite what nurseries tell you, are the Indica Azaleas. There are several varieties. You'll get blooms for two-three weeks only though. If you can't find a blooming hedge, try one with varigated leaves, such as euyonomous or pittisporum. I would go to SEVERAL nurseries and ask for their recommendations. Look at the plants and ask if they know where some examples of mature hedges are in your area. I don't think salt spray is a great concern, but keep in mind sandy soils require more irrigation. Sorry for the VERY limited help.
