privet hedge

Question
I have a privet hedge about 4 feet from the side of the house. I keep it trimmed to about 6 feet tall but I am concerned this plant might damage the house foundation. Should I have it removed. What could I put there that wouldn't cause damage? This on the east side in full sun.

Answer
Hello Linda

Privet can be a bit of a brute because they are greedy feeders! but I have seen privet planted 4' feet from a wall and not causing any problems, so I think I'd be inclined to leave it where it is.

If you are really concerned, you can restrict the root run by cutting slits down through the soil, (about a spade depth down), about 3' from the hedge and inserting something like old roof tiles.
