small whte flying bugs on Gardenia

Question
Hi,
We have a rather large gardenia bush with lost of tiny flying white bugs on it.  This is our first spring in this home, and noticed them this week.  During summer of last year no bugs; no bugs on any other shrubs by this one either.  Any suggestions on what they are and how to get rid of them?  Live in central alabama

Answer
Juanita,

The small white insect that you see are called Whiteflies. These will need to be sprayed for using a material such as Endeavour. I would recommend that you go to your local garden center and tell them what you need- they should have the right material.

When spraying for the Whiteflies, make sure to cover the inside of the shrubs as well as the undersides of the leaves. These are the areas where they are most likely to be found.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
