Hershey Red azaleas

Question
My mother lives in Meridian, Mississippi and has several beds of Hershey reds planted approximately 20 years ago; she needs to replace several plants and cannot locate them in nurseries in the southeast.  Can you shed light on why these are so hard to find?   Thank you!

Answer
Sarah,

It is probably due to the newer, more insect and disease resistant cultivars being readily available. Older cultivars like this are routinely replaced with better varieties and hybrids. I am sure that if you look around, you can find cultivars that are close to the ones that you have.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
