Sweet Bloom (Cytisus spachianus)

Question
I live in Phoenix, AZ and need to know how much water this plant will require to stay happy. We have 2 planting choices, one area will receive more frequent watering and the other will dry out between watering. Cytisus spachianus (sweet bloom. Thank you for your help, Mike

Answer
Hello Mike

Cytisus needs to be planted in moderately fertile, well drained soil, preferably in full sun, but sheltered from cold, drying winds.

During the first growing season after planting, water the plants well during dry spells.  In subsequent years the plants should be well enough established to look after themselves.  However, if the area gets very dry during the summer don't hesitate to help your plants with extra watering. Mulching around the plants with leaf mould or well rotted garden compost will help to retain moisture, but the plants should never be allowed to get waterlogged.

Trim back, after flowering is over, to a young side shoot or healthy bud to maintain a neat rounded shape.
