sweet broom-cytisus x spachianus

Question
This plant was included in our landscaping in April.  It has grown and flurished all summer.  Now it is getting to the time to prepare for fall and winter.  What do we do with this plant?  The branches are beginning to yellow and dry up.  Do we prune to the ground and it will return next spring? We live a a very hot Baton Rouge, LA

Answer
Hi Carol,
Thanx for your question.  I would not prune the shrub too severely.  Prune flowering shrubs after they have completed blooming.  This plant is native to the Canary Islands but it can survive to temperatures down to 15 degrees.  It is recommended for Zone 8-10.  Just clean up any dead or dying material and tidy up their shape.  But don't cut it down to the ground.  I hope this helps.
Tom
