petunia transplant

Question
I transplanted mature petunias putting them in "miracle grow" potting soil in hanging baskets on my deck. Most of them failed. I tried not to disturb the plant when I transplanted it. Should I have cut the stems and roots? Please give me your advise.

Answer
I have difficulty determining what the problem is. I suspect that the transition has been too much for them. Noramlly you would put new transplants in a sheletered (shaded) position for a few days before introducing new a lot of sun. Secondly, baskets need a lot more frequent waterings than petunias in the ground, so maybe this could be the explanation. I suspect it is the rapid transition (with on gradual transition) and lack of adequate water (basekts dry out very quickly)
