Rose of Sharon

Question
I have about ten ROS trees in and around my flower garden that I would like to kill.  They have just gotten way out of control.  I just want them gone now.
Because they are intermixed with other flowers, I don't want to use chemicals to kill them.  I cut most of them down to the ground but leaves are still coming.  I can not get down to cut or remove the root system because a) of the other flowers and b) the roots are so deep and spread out, including under my apartment building.  PLEASE - I hope you can help me!!!

Answer
I hate to say this, but after several days of pondering your very serious problem, my friend, I cannot come up with any solid answer that would not require your lifting your perennials to yank out those Sharons by the roots.

This can be a very invasive plant if you let it take over, which you have unfortunately found out.  Roots will survive and generate new growth if you leave them.  A professional arborist would be your best bet.  I strongly encourage you contact someone about that to get some quotes, at least - because this is a very difficult problem to solve on your own and not such a bad thing for an arborist since they have all the equipment you need, along with expertise.

Sorry I cannot be more optimistic, Shelley, but this is the plain and simple truth.
