Question -
Hi! I live in Maine. I'm haveing yearly problems with grass taking over my creeping phlox, blue fescue, dianthus, snow in the summer, and almost any low growing perenial. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do? I've recently bought some herbicide but am a bit scared to use it.

Also, my silver mound has diminished to just a few tuffs. Any ideas as to why?

Thanks for any help you can give me

Dr. Aston,
Thanx for your question.  Do not use an herbicide or you will probably kill everything.  The only thing I can recommend is hand weeding.  I have the problem every year.  One thing you can do after you had weed and these are perennials is use a product called Preen which helps keep down annual weeds.  It stops them from germinating but usually doesn't harm perennials.  I hope this helps.

Answer
Dear Dr. Aston,
I apologize for missing the silver mound question.  Mine seemed to diminish because it started rotting at the crown.  Have you had a lot of rain?  Does the soil drain well.  Rotting is usually caused by too much water and silver mound (if you're talking about artimesia) likes to dry out a little bit.  I hope this helps.
Tom
