TRANSPLANTED AZALEA

Question
We live in western New York, Zone 6, near Lake Ontario and transplanted a pruned azalea.  After more than a week of daily waterings the leaves still droop.  What can we do to revive this plant?

Answer
It's very difficult to tell you what to do because I haven't seen the plant, but if you have just transplanted it,there will be a period most plants go through, especially larger shrubs, called "transplant shock".
Basically it is a term used for a plant that is settling in and the roots have not grabbed ahold of the soil yet.It is just sitting there basically, waiting for the roots to start developing into it's new situation.
There is really nothing to do but wait.Patience is indeed a virtue here. Just make sure it does not dry out and water it every other day if you don't get any rainfall.
Azaleas have a  shallow root system so they need plenty of moisture and mulch to keep them satisfied. Sometimes they don't make it and you should be able to tell if it shows signs of decline. The leaves will all turn brown and fall off and it will just be  bare branches. It may be easier to start with a fresh shrub in the fall or spring.
Good luck to you and don't sweat it,it's all a part of gardening and mother nature can be cruel at times but the rewards far outweigh the disappointments.
