My yellow azalea

Question
I purchased three azalea's this year, one red, one pink and one yellow. the red and pink bloom but the yellow one buds and then the bufds fall off before they bloom. What is the problem?

Answer
Hi George,
Thanx for your question.  My guess is something happened at the nursery before you bought your plants if the red and pink ones bloomed but the yellow one didn't.  There are a number of reasons for this.  The plant may have been stressed for lack of water at some point, a phosphorus deficiency or the plant was protected enough from cold winds and rain.  If the plant appears healthy other than the blooms dropping, clean up the area around the plant of the dead blooms, mulch well this fall and don't prune this year.  Hopefully, the plant will have recovered and reward you with a bevy of beautiful yellow blossoms next year.  I hope this helps.
Tom
