hibuscus tree

Question
Hi.  I bought a hibuscus tree at lowes several years ago.  I do not know exactly which species it is.  My dog keeps eating the fallen dead buds.  Could they be toxic or dangerous to her?

Answer
Toxic Hibiscus is not growing anywhere on this planet to the best of my knowledge, but that doesn't mean the tissue is not packed with systemic Pesticides and other potentially lethal chemicals.

You don't even have to use them.  A diligent neighbor may think he's doing you a favor by spraying Weedkiller or Bugkiller on a windy day, allowing the spray to drift over to your shrubs.  No dose of that stuff is good for you, and sometimes it will kill you.

My advice: Pick up the buds before Fido gets to them, unless you're certain there's nothing poisonous inside of them.  Take no chances.  Thanks for writing.
