Hibscus Tree

Question
I have a Hibscus plant and have scene hybscus plants that look like they have a Twisted Trunk that makes them look like a tree as opposed to a busy plant. Can I make my plant look like a tree somehow?
If so How can I do that and what do I need ?

Answer
Doug,

If your hibiscus is fairly young and the branches are not too stiff and woody you might be able to. Too make the ones you are describing they are taking 3 young flexible branches, removing all side branches and braiding them together like a hair braid then staking them to stand straight up.  If you have an older woody plant you can still acheive a somewhat tree like form just by picking a branch that goes straight up and pruning everything else off the plant leaving only that one branch. Then prune all side branches off the lower portion of that branch and only allow growth and side shoots on the upper half. During the growing season is spring this could tae daily pinching of shoots that start to grow where they are not wanted. I would not start this project till the first of March when the plant is getting ready to go into a growing season.  You may be able to take some of the cuttings that you take off and dip them in rooting hormone and put them in fresh pots of soil 3 to a pot close together and as they root and start growing try the braiding that we first discussed. The following site has some discussion of braiding various trees and shrubs:
