fruit tree fungi

Question
My fruit trees have a greenish blue fungus or what ever growing on the lower tree trunk.  what can i use to fight or remove this growth.  It looks real ugly

Answer
Sounds like you are describing lichens.  These harmless organisms are symbiotic associations between an algae and a fungus.  They pose no threat to your tree.  If you look around you may find them on many trees in your neighborhood.  You can kill them if you wish.  You will need to use a copper containing fungicide such as Hi-Yield Brand Copper Fungicide, which can be bought at most garden centers.  Several applications may be necessary to rid the tree of them.  It is also likely that they will return in a year or so anyway.  Good Luck.
