wilting dahlias

Question
i have grown dahlias before but never this many in one spot. my dahlias are
wilting in the day despite waterings i have never had large problems with dahlias
but what i noticed is that my dahlias are wilting and there were a few that came
up and stopped growing and when i dug up the spot they were in there was
black goo i think it might be a burrowing insect but i am not sure

Answer
Hi Joshua,
Thanx for your question.  It sounds like you have grubs or maybe moles or ground squirrels munching on the tubers.  There are also a host of diseases that could be causing this.  Don't plant your dahlias in the same place every year if you can rotate.

Check out this site on diseases that afflict dahlias.  I hope this helps.
