monkshood

Question
QUESTION: I live in Massachusetts and have some Monkshood that hasn't bloomed yet, it's been 2 years. It is over 5 ft tall and 2 small plants are now covering 6 square yards!Help!

ANSWER: Hi Kelley,
Thanx for your question.  It sounds like the Monkshood is over crowded.  In late August, dig the plants up and divide them up into smaller individuals.  You can use a very sharp knife for this.  They are tuberous.  If they get too crowded they stop blooming.  Either throw away the excess of give to friends.  Remember that Monkshead (Aconitum) is poisonous and should not be ingested.  I hoep this helps.

QUESTION: I will divide them but I am wondering if it is not truly Monkshood- the leaves look quite similiar but lighter green and these are so much taller (and have more frilly heads)than my plant that I know to be Monkshood.

Answer
Hi Kelley,
Thanx for the additional information.  There are different varieties of monkshood (aconitum) so you may simply have a different species or cultivar.  When you dig them up if they have tuberous roots, you've probably got monks head.  Can you show me a picture?
I hope this helps.
Tom
