virburnm bush

Question
I have had viburnm bushes for about 5 years, and each year, when they bloom, the leaves fold under, and there are black small insects in the rolled leaf. What are they, and what can I do about it? Thank you

Answer
Hi Carol,
Thanx for your question.  It sounds to me like aphids.  Aphids come in a lot of different colors and are about the size of a pin head.  They suck the juices out of leaves causing them to curl and discolor.  Usually, you'll see ants hanging around because they will "herd" and protect the aphids so they can harvest the "honeydew" which is a sweet excrement from the aphids.  You can get rid of aphids by spraying them off with waterblasts from the garden hose 3X a day until they're gone or as a last resort use horticultural soap or pyrethrum.  I hope this helps.
Tom
