snowball bush

Answer
Hi Carrie,

Your plants sound like they are being attacked by a leaf feeding insect.  I suspect that it may be the viburnum leaf beetle based on your description.  You should examine the leaves closely and look for the intruder.  You may find the insects hanging out on the underside of the leaves.

I am pasting two links below that show damage caused by the viburnum leaf beetle and images of the critter so you can confirm that this is your problem.  I see that you are in Ohio.  It looks like your Department of Agriculture has been monitoring spread of this pest, so you may want to contact them if this turns out to be the cause.  This beetle is destructive and they are trying to help the nurseries in your area by keeping them alert that they are in the area.

The fact sheets list several products that are available for home gardeners to control this pest.  You should be able to find at least a few of these insecticides at your local garden center.  The name of the products specified in the fact sheets are the active ingredients which can be found on the product label.

Good luck!
