corkscrew vine

Question
Since this plant is a vine, can I trim it off when it reaches the top of the trellis and will it then fill in with the side branches?  Thanks, Lynda.

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, if you prune the corkscrew vine (Vigna caracalla) it will send out side shoots and become a fuller plant.  Because this is a tropical plant, you can dig up the root in the fall before the first frost, pot it and store it in a cool (not freezing) garage or basement where it will go dormant until next spring.  The plants usually last about 10 years maximum.  I hope this helps.
Tom
