non-blooming lantana

Question
Hello--I live in the Austin Texas area and have lived in other hot areas of the country. I've always had lantana and it's always bloomed profusely. My lantana have lush foliage but it doesn't bloom. Everybody else's does and I can figure what I should be doing differently. It's in the sun on drip irrigation. It doesn't get a lot of water--about the same as when we lived in Las Vegas.

Any suggestions are welcome.  Mimi

Answer
Hi Mimi,
Thanx for your question.  Is your lantana getting fertilized?  If so, you may want to cut back on it.  Too much nitrogen can cause all green growth at the expense of blooming.  Are you overwatering?  Lantana likes to dry out but it will tolerate some wetness and it does quite well in the Deep South too.  Is run off coming from lawn chemicals?  Lawn fertilizers tend to be very high in nitrogen.  Mimi, I suspect the drip irrigation could be causing the problem.  You have enough rainfall in Austin (I know the area well...) that you don't need drip on lantana.  You may be watering it too much.  Another thing you can do is lightly trim back the plants to stimulate the new growth.  Cut the water off first and see what happens.  I hope this helps.
Tom
