butterfly bush

Question
When we moved, we wanted to take our butterfly bush with us, but the new tenants wanted to keep it. Would it be possible to dig up part of the plant and have them both live? If so, is the anything special that I should do to help them do so?

Answer
Hi Michael,
Thanx for your question.  You can cut the butterfly bush to about 1 or 2 feet above ground, dig up the root ball and divide it or chop it in half with a clean, sharp machete or knife.  Promptly replant the other half and take your divided half and dig a hole bigger and deeper than the root ball and replant.  Soak it with water and give it a side dressing of well-composted manure and then mulch it a bit.  That should do the trick and now is a great time to do it.  I hope this helps.
Tom
