TIME TO PLANT BUTTERFLY BUSH LILACS

Question
I RECENTLY RECEIVED A BUTTERFLY BUSH FROM YOU.
CAN I PLANT IT NOW---WEATHERMAN SAYS FROST IN MY AREA WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS--KENOSHA WISCONSIN.  IF I CANT PLANT NOW.  WHAT DO I DO TO KEEP IT GOING UNTIL NEXT YEAR?

Answer
Hello Sandi

Thanks you for your question.

It's a bit puzzling that you say you received a butterfly bush from me - I haven't sent you one!

However - If the bush is in a pot you can plant it at almost any time of the year unless the frosty weather is predicted to be for a prolonged period.  In that case it may be better to wrap the pot in bubble wrap to protect the roots and drape some horticultural fleece over the stems (you should be able to obtain both these from your local garden center or other plant outlet).

Put the plant in a sheltered spot for the winter.  Check it every now and again during the winter and if it seems very dry you can give it a light watering, unless the weather is actually freezing.  Winter is the dormant period, so the plant will not be doing any growing, so watering is not vital.  Plant your butterfly bush next spring (April/May), when the weather warms up.
