Red currant bush

Question
I have to relocate this 6 foot tall bush as we have to expand our deck space to keep people from falling off (it's only 2 feet off the ground)! How deep do I have to dig to get all the roots and how big should the new hole be? Anything else I need to consider? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Judy,
Thanx for your question.  You won't be able to save all the roots but you can dig down about 18 inches deep and about 1 foot out all the way around the shrub.  But first, trim the shrub back so that it will be easier to handle.  After you extract the rootball, shake off as much soil as you can.  Dig the new hole a bit deeper and wider than from where the plant came.  When planting, spread the roots out and center the root ball.  Replace the soil, tamp it down and mulch with grass clippings or leaves and side dress with well-composted manure.  Give it a good soaking.  The plant will start growing out next spring.  I hope this helps.
Tom
